System and Software Requirements
Operating System
Windows: Vista, or 7 (Windows 7 suggested)
Mac OS X 10.5.x or higher.
Software
Adobe Flash 10.x or higher
Adobe Acrobat Reader 9.x or higher
Web browser: Firefox 6.0 or higher, Google Chrome, Safari, or Internet Explorer 8.x or higher.
Word Processor: Microsoft Word is recommended
PRTS does not currently provide an email account for students. We recommend, however, that each student obtain a free Gmail account.
File Backup and Storage
PRTS recommends that each student use an online file storage and management program so that they have an offsite location in the case of a hard drive crash, virus infection, or other catastrophic failure of their computer system. There are several free services available, but for best interactivity with the services that PRTS offers we recommend Dropbox.
Virus Protection and Security
Virus Protection
Each student needs to have virus support for their computers (yes, even Mac users). Most new Windows based computers offer one year of complimentary support, however, we recommend that students remove this software and opt for the free support provided by Microsoft itself.
Mac users can also find several free options available as well. Below are our recommended virus applications.
- Windows
Microsoft Security Essentials - Mac OS X
Sophos Anti-virus
Security
We strongly caution students to never download any additional software from any websites, unless they are certain they need to use the services offered by those providers. Increasingly, malicious software is packaged in what seems legitimate services that claim to speed up a computer, clean a registry, or look for ad-ware, spy-ware, or viruses, or add a search bar to your internet browser. The best practice is not to download any of these programs, because you are putting the personal information of yourself and others at risk.
Printers
Printing from your computer
PRTS has a multi-function printer available for students which is located in the library. Each student will receive a personal account number which gives them access to the printer. Additionally, students will be able to print or copy 1500 pages per semester before they incur any charges for services.
