Full-text Books Online

  • Bible Encyclopedia includes online atlas, encyclopedia, dictionary, thesaurus, concordance, pictures, and topical Bible.
  • Christian Classics Ethereal Library is a digital library of hundreds of classic Christian books selected for edification and education. The online www.ccel.org server reaches several million different users each year.
  • HathiTrust Digital Library is a digital preservation repository and highly functional access platform. It provides long-term preservation and access for both public domain and copyrighted content from a variety of sources, including Google, Internet Archive, Microsoft, and in-house partner institution initiatives. Currently, the digital collection contains 8,219,655 total volumes, both books and periodicals. Search the catalog for subjects like Puritans, Psalms, Sermons, and Jonathan Edwards to retrieve full-text books and journal articles online.
  • Internet Archive A free web resource offering access to digital views or downloads of a wide variety of documents , including books hosted by Google Books, plus audio and video resources. Some of the books are simply images; others have searchable text. It is a helpful means for obtaining complete digital images of books published from the seventeenth century and onward.
  • The Net Bible is an excellent tool especially for those learning the original languages since it has the notes of the Net Bible integrated along with a very useful Greek/Hebrew interlinear tool.

  • Post-Reformation Digital Library: Reformed Authors A free website hosted by Calvin College’s Hekman Library which presents links to digital books in English, Latin, and other languages. It specializes in theological documents published in the Early Modern Era (late fifteenth to eighteenth centuries). Thousands of Reformed, Lutheran, Roman Catholic, Anabaptist, Arminian, and Socinian works are available for digital viewing or download. PRDL links to Google Books, the Internet Archive, and universities around the world to put antiquarian texts at your fingertips.
  • Project Gutenberg Project Gutenberg is the first and largest single collection of free electronic books, or eBooks. Michael Hart, founder of Project Gutenberg, invented eBooks in 1971 and continues to inspire the creation of eBooks and related technologies today. Project Gutenberg contains a large collection of books related to Christianity and church history.
  • Works of Jonathan Edwards (WJE) The online, searchable Works of Edwards from the Jonathan Edwards Center at Yale University.

Journal Articles Online

  • RTA (Religious and Theological Abstracts): This abbreviated, free version of RTA provides abstracts to thousands of journal articles. Its only limitation is that it provides no more than five abstracts for a given subject or Scripture text.

Journal Article Collections at PRTS

  • PRTS Article File This full-text article file contains religious, evangelical, theological, and historical articles collected by the late Dr. Benjamin Boerkoel, Sr. and donated to Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary. These articles are in order by the author’s last name and are physically located in the filing cabinet on the east wall of the library.
  • Puritan Studies Index Search our Puritan studies collection of articles, reviews, and other documents. These printed materials are located in the Puritan Research Center, organized by author’s last name. Articles may be photocopied.

Research Helps

  • PeRT (Puritan Electronic Research Tool). This Scripture Index File, years in the making, contains literally hundreds of thousands of Scripture citations, from every chapter of the Bible, and is now accessible online. You will be able to search for Scriptures references from thousands of PRTS Library books, periodicals and other Library resources. The author and title of the source are provided, with relevant page numbers.
  • Subject Guide, Tutorials, and Recommended Books
  • Virtual Religion Index Directory for religious studies, including Christianity and other world religions. This Virtual Religion Index is a tool for students with little time. It analyzes & highlights important content of religion-related websites to speed research. Hyperlinks are provided not only to homepages but to major directories & documents within. Our purpose is not to circumvent tours of worthy sites, but to cut down the time spent on surfing & sorting of automated searches.
  • Calvinism Resources Database This database provides access to articles, essays, and lectures dealing with John Calvin and Calvinism from the 16th century to the present.  In 1971 the Calvinism Resources Database (CaRD) began as a “Calvin Bibliography” covering the years 1960-1970.  It was compiled by Joseph N. Tylenda, a Jesuit priest, and published in the Calvin Theological Journal.  Since that time, the Journal has published annually in its November issue the “Calvin Bibliography.”  The bibliography and database are maintained by the curator of the H. Henry Meeter Center for Calvin Studies and is updated regularly.
  • TREN: Theological Research Exchange Network-TREN is a library of over 10,000 theological thesis/dissertation titles representing research from as many as 70 different institutions. ThM dissertations from Westminster Theological Seminary are available (for purchase) from 1984 to current. DMin projects from WTS are available from1986 onward.  TREN also makes available conference papers presented at annual meetings of several academic societies.
  • ARDA: Association of Religion Data Archive-The ARDA allows you to interactively explore the highest quality data on American and international religion using online features for generating national profiles, maps, church membership overviews, denominational heritage trees, tables, charts, and other summary reports. Over 350 data files are available for online preview and most can be downloaded for additional research.
  • Directory of Open Access Journals This service covers free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals in all subjects and languages. There are now 2897 journals in the directory. Currently 933 journals are searchable at article level.
  • Religion Online More than 6,000 articles and chapters. Topics include Old and New Testament, Theology, Ethics, History and Sociology of Religion, Communication and Cultural Studies, Pastoral Care, Counseling, Homiletics, Worship, Missions and Religious Education.
  • Review of Biblical Literature The Review of Biblical Literature (RBL), founded by the Society of Biblical Literature, presents reviews of books in biblical studies and related fields. Appearing in this digital form and in print, RBL is comprehensive, international, and timely. Free, online book reviews of scholarly literature in biblical studies. About 400 reviews per year.
  • The Theologian: Internet Journal for Integrated Theology The Theologian is dedicated to presenting theological and pastoral resources of the highest quality to the wider church over the internet.
