Journal Article Databases
- ATLA-Religion combines the premier index to journal articles, book reviews, and collections of essays in all fields of religion with ATLA’s online collection of major religion and theology journals. Coverage in this database begins in 1908, although indexing for some journal titles extends back into the nineteenth century. Full text is provided for more than 285,300 electronic articles and book reviews from 150 journals selected by leading religion scholars in the United States. This database is produced by the American Theological Library Association

- New England Quarterly This journal contains the best that has been written on New England’s cultural, political, social, and literary history. Contributions cover a range of time periods, from before European colonization to the present, and any subject germane to New England’s history. You’ll see all the articles we have access to marked with a green circle with the PDF links right under the citation.
- Reformed Christian Sources Index This index, compiled by Michael Keen, provides an index to the following periodicals and resources: Banner of Truth Magazine (1955-2006), Reformation Today (1970-2006), Westminster/Puritan Conference (1955-2006), along with selected Banner Website articles (2000-2006).
- Religion & Philosophy Collection This collection provides extensive coverage of such topics as world religions, major denominations, Biblical studies, religious history, epistemology, political philosophy, philosophy of language, moral philosophy and the history of philosophy. With more more than 300 full text journals, the Religion & Philosophy Collection is an essential tool for researchers and students of theology and philosophical studies.
Print Periodicals in the Library
- Journals, magazines, and other serial publications are shelved alphabetically by title. Current issues up to one year old by the Reference section and back issues at the southeast side of the library. These issues may be photocopied since they are not allowed to leave the library. If a particular issue is missing, you may request it by ILL. If you want to search for a specific journal title to see which issues are available currently at PRTS, select “Journal Title” in the online catalog (rather than keyword or title, etc) and type the journal name.
- PeRT (Puritan Electronic Research Tool). This Scripture Index File, years in the making, contains literally hundreds of thousands of Scripture citations, from every chapter of the Bible, and is now accessible online. You will be able to search for Scriptures references from thousands of PRTS Library books, periodicals and other Library resources. The author and title of the source are provided, with relevant page numbers.
- Post-Reformation Theological Research File This collection was donated to the seminary by Dr. Richard A. Muller. It consists of secondary source material used in his post-Reformation research and consequent publications. The focus of the materials is on the development of Protestant thought in the 16th and 17th centuries, including materials dealing with medieval and Renaissance backgrounds. Articles may be photocopied.
- The PRTS Article File contains religious, evangelical, theological, and historical articles collected by the late Dr. Benjamin Boerkoel, Sr. and donated to Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary. These articles are in order by the author’s last name and are physically located in the filing cabinet beside the library front desk. Articles may be photocopied.
- Puritan Studies Index Search through our Puritan studies collection of articles, reviews, and other documents. These printed materials are located in the Puritan Research Center, organized by author’s last name. Articles may be photocopied.
- Theological Journal Library Access to this full-text journal library of 29 scholarly (primary evangelical) journals is limited to student computer #1 located in the library.
Free Journal Articles Online
- Calvinism Resources Database This database provides access to articles, essays, and lectures dealing with John Calvin and Calvinism from the 16th century to the present. In 1971 the Calvinism Resources Database (CaRD) began as a “Calvin Bibliography” covering the years 1960-1970. It was compiled by Joseph N. Tylenda, a Jesuit priest, and published in the Calvin Theological Journal. Since that time, the Journal has published annually in its November issue the “Calvin Bibliography.” The bibliography and database are maintained by the curator of the H. Henry Meeter Center for Calvin Studies and is updated regularly.
- Digibron-Kenniscentrum Gereformeerde Gezindte This Dutch site is a digital library of well-known Dutch periodicals, including De Saambinder and Daniel. Every issue of the periodical titles included in the database is available full-text.
- Directory of Open Access Journals This service covers free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals in all subjects and languages. There are now 2897 journals in the directory. Currently 933 journals are searchable at article level.

- HathiTrust Digital Library is a digital preservation repository and highly functional access platform. It provides long-term preservation and access for both public domain and copyrighted content from a variety of sources, including Google, Internet Archive, Microsoft, and in-house partner institution initiatives. Currently, the digital collection contains 8,219,655 total volumes, both books and periodicals. Search the catalog for subjects like Puritans, Psalms, Sermons, and Jonathan Edwards to retrieve full-text books and journal articles online.
- OAIster is a union catalog of millions of records representing open access digital resources that was built by harvesting from open access collections worldwide using the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). Today, OAIster includes more than 25 million records representing digital resources from more than 1,100 contributors. The wide range of materials available in OAIster includes: digitized (scanned) books, journal articles, newspapers, manuscripts, digital text, audio files (wav, mp3), video files (mp4, QuickTime), photographic images (jpeg, tiff, gif), data sets (downloadable statistical information), and theses and research papers.

- Review of Biblical Literature The Review of Biblical Literature (RBL), founded by the Society of Biblical Literature, presents reviews of books in biblical studies and related fields. Appearing in this digital form and in print, RBL is comprehensive, international, and timely. Free, online book reviews of scholarly literature in biblical studies. About 400 reviews per year.
- RTA (Religious and Theological Abstracts): This abbreviated, free version of RTA provides abstracts to thousands of journal articles. Its only limitation is that it provides no more than five abstracts for a given subject or Scripture text.
- The Theologian: Internet Journal for Integrated Theology The Theologian is dedicated to presenting theological and pastoral resources of the highest quality to the wider church over the internet.
